DUTCH

IT’S LIKE a rose. When someone says: think of a rose, most people immediately imagine one, typically red. Say: think of Tiger Woods, and you immediately picture him, most likely in the red polo shirt he was wearing when he won his first Masters.

Mother Woods is from Thailand, carrying the lovely name of Kultida. But already thirty years ago she couldn’t stand the fact that everyone pre-classifies her son by his skin color. In an interview with Newsweek in 1995, she said, “Whoever calls Tiger black denies my existence. Do you know what my grandfather’s mother was? Dutch! White!”

Moreover, his name is not Tiger, but Eldrick, after a hamlet between the Dutch towns of Doesburg and Doetinchem.
