Americans each eat an average of 235 pancakes a year. That’s 75 billion Dutch moments in total. Because there is nothing American about the American pancake.
The Dutch imported the Dutch pancake as soon as they invented America starting in 1624. By then it had long been commonplace food in the households of Dutch master painter Jan Steen. And of other painters such as Jan van Bijlert, Willem van Mieris, Abraham de Pape, and Pieter Aertsen who painted this scene in the year 1560.
The recipe caught on. Today, the US counts 7,000 pancake restaurants.
