DUTCH

AH, THOSE perfect lazy Saturdays or Sundays with an old-fashioned, raisins-filled pancake with stroop from Holland.

Dutch emigrants exported the pancake to America. And the apple pie, and also the oliebol that eventually became a donut, the waffle, the stroopwafel, the Leiden and Gouda cheese, and even the pizza, long before Italians came to America. Golden Age Dutch sailors had detected pizzas in Italy, round, sliced, and they copied what they saw. So by the time Italians migrated to the US in large numbers in the mid-19th century, they found their favorite food already waiting for them there.
