DUTCH

Doris Day had her birthday last week, April 3. She would have turned 102. Her real last name was Kappelhoff, which is why everyone always thinks she was originally German.

But she was originally simply from the Dutch town of Delfzijl.

Great-grandfather Herman Kappelhof, with one f, was a veterinarian and died far too young in Loppersum, but grandmother Margreet Schoonbeek of Groningen made it to well beyond seventy. The family made a stopover in Münster, just across the border from Overijssel, on their way to Cincinnati, Ohio, hence the misunderstanding, but for the record:

So Doris Day is Dutch. Happy belated birthday, Que sera sera!
