NIGHT OR storm, rain or shine, I always keep watch. Because you never know. As mayor of Bicker Hollow, Maine, I am automatically also the chief of police. Those here are mostly concerned with catching mice, chasing away squirrels, and looking out for the mailman or the boys and girls from Fedex or UPS.
They are the heroes of “the last mile.” We do grocery shopping very remotely and very simply via a laptop or smartphone, at Amazon, Walmart or McDonalds. But if you want to get that delivered, here you always depend on who delivers it to your door. Doordash will now deliver your burger with a drone. But not in remote Bicker Hollow. Amazon dispatches driverless EV trucks across the country, but not that last mile in Maine.
And Walmart? I ordered a very special whiskey. I was much aware that the last mile had to be achieved through the snow. So I took watch. And sure enough, VanderBus was not disappointed.
* VanderBus left home at the age of six weeks and went hunting for a city bus in Maine. He caught the bus. It cost him one eye, but he won a standing ovation from everyone who watched him do it. VanderBus, since then mayor of Bicker Hollow, is running for president of the United States.
